Thunder Teams Ring in New Year with Six Wins

M&M Thunder Hockey rang in the new year with six wins over the weekend. The Squirts went 3-0-1 while the PeeWee team split at Merrill and the Bantams took a pair of wins at LaCrosse.

 

HIGH SCHOOL

The M&M Thunder High School hockey team hosted Kenosha at the Community REC Center on Sunday. The Komets closed the game with four unanswered goals to win 7-2.

Kenosha got a first-period goal from Benjamin Pelli, but Theron Thayer tied the game with assists from Chad Kenney and Joseph Danielak early in the second.

The Komets pushed ahead 3-1 before Adam Lemery got the Thunder within a goal off an assist from Jordan Carvenough with four minutes to play in the second.

Penalties plagued the Thunder who racked up nine infractions including six in the last 17 minutes of the contest.

Kenosha put a pair of goals on the board in the final minutes of the second-period and then notched a pair of power play goals in the third.

Nya Patneaude made 23 saves against 30 shots, while Kenosha’s Travis Standerski made 27 stops for the Komets.

The Thunder will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Dodgeville for a pair of games.

BANTAM

The Bantams headed west this weekend for four games at La Crosse and Sparta. The team dropped both contests with Sparta but swept La Crosse.

On Saturday Brayden Rounds netted three goals and dished out three assists in a 7-3 win over La Crosse. Rounds assisted Caiden Radtke to start the scoring before scoring a pair of unassisted tallies. Blue Haley added a second-period goal before Rounds completed his hat-trick to give the Thunder a 5-2 lead heading into the final period. Damien Winterbottom and Mason Kodric stretched the margin to 7-3 in the third period. Avery Waloway made 14 saves in the victory.

On Sunday the Thunder took a 7-5 battle at La Crosse. Haley posted a hat-trick while Rounds added two more goals. Kodric and Kyler Appleguise also found the net. The Thunder led 3-1 following the first period, but La Crosse tied the game at 4-4 heading into the third. A third-period goal from Appleguise and two more from Haley sealed the win. Waloway made 16 saves to preserve the win.

PEEWEE

The PeeWees split a pair of games at Merrill on Saturday, rebounding from a 9-1 loss in the opener to notch an 8-6 win in the night-cap.

Collin Campbell scored the lone Thunder goal in the loss. In game two, the Thunder took a 3-0 lead with goals from Wyatt Denny, Campbell and Chuckie Bird. A second goal from Campbell made it 4-2 heading to the second period. Campbell completed a hat-trick early in the second and Denny found the net again to make it 6-4 through two. After Merrill got within a goal in the third-period, Logan Sakovitz gave the Thunder some breathing room. Merrill answered to make it 7-6, but Denny completed his hat-trick to account for the 8-6 final score. Connor Radtke made 31 saves in the victory.

12U GIRLS

The 12U Girls took on Tomah on Saturday and Washington County on Sunday at the Community REC Center. Natalie Haile scored the lone Thunder goal on Saturday, while Katie Olson racked up 84 saves in the two games against Tomah. Olson was good for 61 more saves on Sunday completing a busy weekend in the net.

10U GIRLS

The 10U Girls hosted Washington County on Saturday and Eau Claire on Sunday. Whitney Haile scored in a 6-1 loss in the opening game. Madison Salewsky made 12 saves in game two, which the Thunder narrowly lost 2-1. Sunday’s action opened with another tough 2-1 loss. Haile found the net again, while Gracelyn Loomis made 18 saves. Haile later posted a hat-trick in an 11-3 loss.

SQUIRT

The Squirt team has won eight of its last ten games, going 8-1-1 since Dec. 19. After opening the weekend with a 1-1 tie, the team won three straight while outscoring their opponents 22-1.

The action started with a 1-1 tie at Oshkosh on Saturday. Jesse McClarren salvaged the tie with a third-period goal while Owen Shaffer made 18 saves. The Thunder then exploded for an 8-0 win. Connor Eastman scored his first of two goals just 24 seconds into the game. Parker Perket (2), Shaffer, Alex Bird, Easton Baty, and McClarren also scored in the route while Jack Aftanas pitched the shutout with nine saves.

On Sunday, the Thunder topped Green Bay 7-1 and 7-0. In game one, Baty started the scoring with his first of two goals. Eastman and McClarren added a pair of goals each and Calvin Schroeder scored as well. In game two Lucien Thayer got the scoring started. Perket netted a pair while Eastman, Owen Haley, Baty and McClarren all scored and Shaffer notched his first shutout with four saves.
