Thunder Hockey Enjoys Winning Weekend

MARINETTE – Thunder Hockey enjoyed a winning weekend. The action was highlighted by a tournament championship from the Cross Ice White team as well as a pair of wins by the PeeWee team at the Resch center.

 

MARINETTE – Thunder Hockey enjoyed a winning weekend. The action was highlighted by a tournament championship from the Cross Ice White team as well as a pair of wins by the PeeWee team at the Resch center. The 12U Girls (2-2), 10U Girls (2-0) and Squirts (1-1) also delivered wins, while the High School team picked up a draw at Rock County.

The High School team is scheduled to host its home tournament at the Community REC Center this coming weekend, while the PeeWees will host Manitowoc in a Playdown game on Saturday.

HIGH SCHOOL

The High School team played three games this weekend going 0-2-1. On Saturday, the Thunder fell 8-1 at Kenosha. On Sunday, they earned a 4-4 tie at Rock County before falling 11-1 at SHAW.

Adam Lemery scored the lone Thunder goal against both Kenosha and SHAW.

The contest with Rock County was a physical match riddled with 19 penalties (9 against the Thunder and ten for the Raptors). Jordan Carvenough answered an early Raptors goal, but the Thunder trailed 3-1 at the end of the first period.

Lemery knocked in a pair of goals in the second period, tying the game 3-3 with 9:26 on the clock off an assist from Simon Bowers.

With 3:38 to play in the third, Mason Boivin scored an unassisted goal to put the Thunder up 4-3, but Rock County’s Dillon Buss scored just over a minute later and the game ended in a 4-4 tie.

The Thunder will host their home tournament at the Community REC Center this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

PEEWEE

The PeeWee team improved to 15-12 on the season with a 4-0 weekend. The team delivered 10-2 and 6-1 wins over Sun Prairie at the REC Center on Saturday. On Sunday they played at the Resch Center in Green Bay and topped DePere with scores of 9-6 and 8-6.

In game one at the Resch Center, Wyatt Denny got the Thunder on the board first, scoring just 2:15 into the contest. Denny closed the first period with a second goal off an assist from Chase Nerat to bring the score to 2-1.

Goals from Collin Campbell, Nerat and Chuckie Bird in the second period sent the game to the final stanza with the Thunder leading 5-4.

The Voyagers tied the game just 40 seconds into the third, but Campbell answered five minutes later, and Denny followed with his third goal of the game, putting the Thunder on top for good. Late in the third, Campbell completed his first of two hat-tricks on the day  and Logan Sakovitz scored as well to cap the scoring at 9-6.

Ethan King made 22 saves to pick up the win.

In game two, Michael O’Connor and Campbell answered two early goals from the Voyagers. DePere scored with two minutes to play in the first, but Denny scored ten seconds later to end the period with a 3-3 score.

Dixon Polzin scored the lone goal of the second period, with an assist from Campbell, giving the Thunder a 4-3 advantage.

DePere tied the game early in the third, but Campbell answered with an unassisted tally. Bryce Vincent followed with a goal off an assist from Courtney Campbell, and Collin Campbell completed his second hat-trick to push the Thunder lead to 7-5 with 8:22 to play.

Denny later put the game out of reach with his second goal of the game. DePere scored in the final minute to account for the 8-6 final score.

Connor Radtke made 22 saves in the win.

On Saturday, the Thunder outscored Sun Prairie 16-3 in two contests. In a 10-2 victory in game one, Dixon (5) and Campbell (3) accounted for eight goals, while Nerat and Bird put the puck in the net as well.

The PeeWees will host Iron Mountain on Friday and a Playdown game with Manitowoc on Saturday.

12U GIRLS

The 12U Girls hosted the DePere 12UC Boys on Saturday and fell with scores of 4-1 and 5-1. On Sunday, they swept the Fox River 10U Girls with matching 2-1 scores.

On Saturday, Arianna Johnson scored off an assist from Harper Burke in the third period to account for the Thunder’s only offense in game one. Katie Olson made 32 saves in the contest.

In game two, Whitney Haile scored the lone Thunder goal during a third-period power play. Olson made 20 stops.

In Sunday’s opening game against the Fox River Freeze Kendal Truckey scored with an assist from Haile and Haile netted the game winner with an assist form Johnson. Olson stopped 29-of-30 shots against her.

In the second game, Truckey handled the offense, scoring both goals, once unassisted and once with a helper from Johnson. Olson finished with 34 saves.

The girls will return to the ice on Saturday when they travel to Green Bay.

SQUIRT

A shorthanded Squirt team hosted Manitowoc at the REC Center on Saturday and came away with a 2-2 tie and a 4-1 win to improve to 14-13-3 on the season.

In game one, Brayden Forgette scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Thomas Canning in the first period. Not to be outdone, Carter Erdman netted his first goal (with an assist from Parker Perket) to tie the game with just over four minutes to play.

Jack Aftanas stopped 14-of-16 shots to preserve the tie.

After a scoreless first period in game two, Chet Lacy started a flurry of scoring when he scored his first goal of the season with assists from Calvin Schroeder and Connor Eastman early in the second period. The Thunder scored three more times in the next three minutes to stun the Breakers.

Goals from Eastman, Perket and Aftanas pushed the score to 4-0 before the Breakers scored late in the second.

Owen Shaffer made ten saves to pick up the win.

The Squirts will travel to Antigo for a pair of games on Saturday.

10U GIRLS

The 10U Girls swept a pair of games from the Central Wisconsin Storm at the REC Center on Sunday, winning with scores of 5-2 and 3-0.

In game one, Whitney Haile netted a pair of goals. Everleigh Wilson and Truckey notched unassisted tallies and Anna Oberdorfer capped the scoring with assists from Sam Miller and Haile.

Gracelyn Loomis made 10 saves in the win.

In game two, Loomis came up with 17 saves to earn the shutout. Haile netted all three goals giving her seven goals in six games over the weekend between the 10U and 12U levels. Erin Vincent added an assist in the 3-0 victory.

The 10U girls return to action when they travel to Appleton to take on the Fox River Freeze on Saturday.

MITES

The 8U White team took home first place at the Manitowoc Maritime Tournament this weekend with wins over Ozaukee, Escanaba, DePere and Oregon.

In the four games, the team allowed just three goals behind stellar goaltending from Landon Dura and Finn Eastman. Dura posted a shutout in a 7-0 win over Ozaukee, while Eastman shutout Escanaba 3-0.

Dura was between the pipes for a 3-1 semifinal win over DePere and a 4-2 win in the championship game against Oregon.

Meanwhile the 8U Blue team finished sixth in the tournament, posting a win over Ozaukee.
