This weekend in Thunder Hockey, the High School team posted a third-place finish in their Border Battle Tournament at the Community REC Center. Meanwhile the PeeWee team defeated Manitowoc in a playdown game to punch their ticket to State.

HIGH SCHOOL

The High School team hosted the Border Battle Tournament at the Community REC Center over the weekend. The team went 3-2 in five games to finish third.

The action started with a 9-3 win over Marquette Friday night. Trailing 2-0 after the first period, Theron Thayer took matters into his own hands, netting three straight goals to give the Thunder the lead. Mason Boivin and Adam Lemery added goals in the second period to push the score to 5-3. The Thunder shutout Marquette in the third period while adding goals from Jacob Pantti, Mason Denny (2) and Lemery. Niya Patneaude needed only 13 saves to preserve the win.

In a Saturday triple-header, the Thunder came away with a 9-3 victory over Green Bay United, but fell to Hancock and Kenosha with scores of 5-2 and 4-2 respectively. During the nightcap against Kenosha the team celebrated its three senior athletes, Jordan Carvenough, Jake Pantti and Jason Bowers.

Against Green Bay, Lemery got the scoring started with an early goal and Denny tied the game at 2-2 late in the first period. Denny was just getting started, and added two more goals in the second period and a fourth in the third period. The Thunder outscored United 5-1 in the second and cruised to the victory. Patneaude made 38 saves in the win.

At 2-2 in pool play, the Thunder were the tournament’s third seed and squared off Sunday with Marquette for third place. A four-goal first period set the tone early. Kennison Boivin got the scoring started with an unassisted goal. Jordan Carvenough then found the net, and Kennison followed with his second of the game. A Lemery goal pushed the score to 4-0 heading into the second period.

The Thunder added a second-period goal from Thayer and a third-period strike from Lemery on their way to a 6-1 win. Patneaude made 19 saves.

Offense was not a problem for the Thunder as they averaged 5.6 goals per game. Denny finished the tournament with seven goals, while Lemery scored six and Thayer added five.

The Thunder will return to action on Sunday when they host SHAW at the REC Center.

BANTAM

The Bantam team dropped a game at DePere (6-1) on Saturday and two more against Manistique (8-1, 6-0) on Sunday.

The team’s only offense came in the form of a Brayden Rounds goal against DePere and a Blue Haley goal against Manistique. Ava McDonald tended the goal against Manistique and totaled 51 saves in the doubleheader.

The Bantams are back on the ice when they host DePere on Sunday. The Thunder will look to even the series with the Voyagers after playing to a tie and a loss in the first two meetings.

PEEWEE

The Thunder PeeWees delivered a 7-3 win over Manitowoc in a playdown game at the REC Center on Saturday. The team has won six in a row to move to 17-12 on the season.

The Breakers scored first when Bru Wernli scored less than two minutes into the game.

Wyatt Denny started the second period by tying the game at 1-1 and then giving the Thunder the lead early in the period. A Collin Campbell goal made it 3-1 heading into the final period.

The Breakers got back within a goal early in the third, but goals from Connor Radtke and Chase Nerat stretched the margin to 5-2. Midway through the period, Collin and Courtney Campbell both scored to put the game out of reach before the Breakers scored an inconsequential goal in the final minute.

Ethan King turned in 13 saves against 16 shots in the win.

The PeeWee’s also defeated Iron Mountain by a score of 7-0 on Friday. Logan Sakovitz and Denny each had a hat-trick in that game while Collin Campbell scored as well. Radtke tended the goal and stopped all nine shots he faced to pick up the team’s fourth shutout of the season.

The PeeWees will play in the Amery Tournament this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

12U GIRLS

The 12U Girls were defeated by a score of 7-1 in a playdown game at Green Bay on Saturday. Natalie Haile scored the lone goal while Katie Olson made 19 saves.

The girls will return to play on Saturday when they host Sauk Prairie at the REC Center.

10U GIRLS

The 10U Girls dropped a 7-1 decision in Appleton on Sunday. Whitney Haile scored the lone Thunder goal.

The team will play at Green Bay in a pair of games on Sunday.

SQUIRT

The Squirt team dropped a pair of games (2-1 and 8-2) at Antigo against the Antigo A team on Saturday.

In game one, the team was outshot 36-5, but Jack Aftanas made a herculean effort to come up with 34 saves and give his team a chance. Connor Eastman scored in the third period, but the Thunder came up on the short end of a 2-1 score.

Aftanas and Calvin Schroeder scored in an 8-2 loss in game two.

The Squirts return to play on Saturday when they host Shawano at the REC Center.
