Thunder PeeWees and Mites feel the love on Valentine's Day

MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder PeeWee and Mite teams both took tournament championships on Valentine’s Day. The PeeWee team won the Amery Tournament while the Mites won the Rhinelander Tournament. Meanwhile the 12U Girls and Squirt teams claimed victories at the Community REC Center over the Weekend.

 

HIGH SCHOOL

The Thunder High School team dropped a pair of games to Southeastern Hockey Association of Wisconsin (SHAW) at the REC Center on Sunday, falling with scores of 7-0 and 8-0.

The High School team will return to the ice this weekend when they travel to Houghton, Mich. for a doubleheader on Saturday and Hancock for a single contest on Sunday.

BANTAM

The Bantam team hosted DePere at the REC Center Sunday afternoon. The Voyagers erased a 2-0 deficit and came away with a 3-2 win.

Blue Haley got the Thunder on the board first with 6:34 remaining in the first period. Seconds later, Damien Winterbottom made it 2-0.

However, Haley was whistled for three penalties in the first period, picked up a fourth early in the second period and sat the remainder of the game.

The Voyagers took advantage and got on the board in the second period. In the third, after Brayden Rounds picked up his fourth penalty, DePere’s Ian Johnson tied the game on a power play with 3:28 to play. Eight seconds later, Johnson scored again, and the Voyagers held on for a 3-2 win.

The Thunder were called for nine penalties in the game while the Voyagers were called for four.

Ava McDonald made a valiant effort in goal, stopping 40 of 43 DePere shots on goal.

The Bantams return to action February 26-28 when they hit the road for a tournament in La Crosse.

PEEWEE

The PeeWee team dominated the action at the Amery Tournament over the weekend. The Thunder defeated Waunakee, Eau Claire and Burnett by a combined score of 26-3. In doing so, they pushed their winning streak to nine games while improving to 20-12 on the season.

On Saturday, the Thunder opened the action with an 8-0 shellacking of Waunakee. Collin Campbell scored the team’s first three goals and Wyatt Denny and Ethan King added tallies to make it 5-0 after one period of play. Courtney Campbell and Chase Nerat scored in the second period and Collin Campbell netted his fourth of the game in the third period to cap the scoring at 8-0. Connor Radtke pitched the shutout with nine saves.

Saturday night went nearly as well as the Thunder delivered an 8-1 win over Eau Claire. Nerat and Denny got the scoring started in the first period, while goals from Chuckie Bird and Denny pushed the margin to 4-0 in the second. Two more goals from Nerat and another from Collin Campbell pushed the score to 7-0 before Eau Claire broke the shutout with six minutes to play. Denny then capped the scoring with his third goal of the game. Radtke made five saves in the win.

On Sunday, the Thunder met Burnett in the tournament championship game and stepped up the offensive production on their way to a 10-2 win. Bird scored in the first minute of the game then added a second midway through the first. A goal from Collin Campbell brought the score to 3-1 after the first period. The Thunder outscored Burnett 4-0 in the second with goals from Denny, Courtney Campbell, Wesley Baty and Nerat. Michael O’Connor, Logan Sakovitz and Nerat found the net in the third as the Thunder overwhelmed Burnett 10-2. Radtke made 16 saves to secure the title.

Collin Campbell, Wyatt Denny and Chase Nerat had outstanding offensive performances. Campbell finished the tournament with six goals and five assists. Denny scored five goals and dished out five assists, and Nerat added six goals.

The PeeWee’s will return to action this weekend at the Antigo Tournament.

12U GIRLS

The 12U Girls split a doubleheader with Sauk Prairie at the REC Center on Saturday. The Thunder took game one, 5-1 while the Monkeys prevailed in game two, 5-3.

In game one, Kendal Truckey got the scoring started with 3:45 remaining in the first period, then added a second strike in the second period. Natalie Haile scored in the third period before Truckey completed a hat-trick and Sparky Sparpanic capped the scoring. Katie Olson stopped 24 of the 25 shots she faced.

In game two, the Monkeys got on the board first, but Truckey got that goal back in the opening seconds of the second period. Natalie Haile then scored two in a row to make it 3-1 before the Monkeys closed the period with a goal to get within one. Sauk Prairie’s Jordyn Schmid tied the game in the third and a pair of goals from Kenzington Kleist swung the game in favor of the Monkeys. Olson made 26 saves in the loss.

After winning three of their last five, the girls will return to action at Washington County on Saturday.

SQUIRT

The Squirt team hosted Shawano on Saturday and Manitowoc on Sunday. The team played Shawano to a pair of 1-1 draws. On Sunday they took game one, 5-0 and fell in game two 3-2.

In game one against Shawano, Jesse McClarren scored the game-tying goal off an assist from Owen Shaffer with 1:53 to play in the contest. Jack Aftanas made 12 saves in goal.

In game two, Parker Perket gave the Thunder a brief lead in the second period, but Shawano answered less than a minute later. Shaffer stopped eight of the nine shots he faced.

The Thunder opened Sunday’s action with a 5-0 victory over Manitowoc. After a scoreless first period, Kelven Winterbottom got the scoring started late in the second period. Aftanas scored midway through the second period and Connor Eastman followed immediately with a goal to make it 3-0. Later in the period. McClarren and Eastman scored in succession to push the score to 5-0. Lucien Thayer made nine saves to secure the team’s fifth shutout of the season.

In game two, the two teams again battled through a scoreless first period. The Thunder scored first when Aftanas found the net off an assist from Wyatt Kneath. The Breakers scored two in a row before Calvin Schroeder tied the game off an assist from Owen Haley in the closing moments of the second period. The 2-2 score held until Manitowok’s Nick Hyde scored the game-winner 10 minutes into the third period. Shaffer made 11 saves for the Thunder.

The Squirts will return to the ice on Saturday when they take on Antigo/Merrill in Merrill.

10U GIRLS

The 10U Girls played at Green Bay on Sunday dropping both games with scores of 7-1 and 3-2.

Kendal Truckey scored the lone Thunder goal in game one while Gracelyn Loomis made 21 saves.

In game two, Truckey again supplied all the offense while Natalie and Whitney Haile each had an assist. Loomis made 17 saves, but the Thunder came up just short in a tough 3-2 game.

The girls will return to action on Sunday when they travel to Wausau for a doubleheader.

MITES

The Thunder Cross Ice White team took home a second consecutive tournament championship on Sunday when they won the Rhinelander Tournament.

The Mites won their first two games, 15-2 against Merrill and 26-0 against the Everest Bruins. After losing 5-3 against Rhinelander to finish out pool play, they defeated the Everest Wild 9-5 in the semifinals and then topped Copper Country 9-7 in the championship game.

The Mites will host a Jamboree at the REC Center on Saturday, February 27.
