MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder PeeWee Hockey team ran its win-streak to 11 games and reached the final of the Antigo Tournament this weekend before suffering its first loss since mid-January. Meanwhile the 10U Girls team earned a pair of shutout wins against the Central Wisconsin Storm.

HIGH SCHOOL

The Thunder High School team crossed the border into Michigan this weekend for a trio of games and came away with three narrow losses. On Saturday, they fell to the Houghton JV team 4-2 and 2-1. On Sunday, they were defeated by the Hancock JV team 4-0.

In Saturday’s action Mason Boivin got the Thunder within a goal at 2-1 in the second period with assists from Joe Danielak and Mason Denny, but Houghton added two strikes in the third period before Jordan Carvenough capped the scoring with five minutes to play.

In game two, Denny tied the game at 1-1 with four minutes to play in the second period, but Houghton answered with the eventual game-winner two minutes later.

On Sunday, the Thunder were plagued by ten penalties while Hancock was whistled only twice. Hancock outshot the Thunder 22-17 leaving Niya Patneaude’s under continuous pressure. Patneaude made 18 saves in the loss.

The Thunder are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Manistique for a pair of games.

PEEWEE

The PeeWee team topped Merrill 8-2 on Friday and Marquette 5-2 on Saturday to push its winning streak to 11 consecutive games and reach the final of a second consecutive tournament.

The Thunder opened the action in Antigo Friday with a convincing 8-2 win over Merrill. Collin Campbell took matters into his own hands, scoring each of the first five Thunder goals. Campbell netted a hat-trick in the first period to stake goalie Ethan King to a 3-0 lead. Campbell started the second period with a short-handed goal and added a fifth before Merrill got on the board. Wyatt Denny added a pair of goals and Chase Nerat also scored during a 5-goal second period. King made 15 saves to preserve the win.

On Saturday the Thunder topped Marquette 5-2. The Thunder got a first-period goal from Logan Sakovitz with an assist from Nerat, but trailed 2-1 following the opening frame. Denny and Campbell each scored goals in both the second and third periods, while King, who made only three saves in the first period, tossed a shutout for the remainder of the game while tacking on 11 more saves.

That win set up a rematch with Merrill in Sunday’s championship game, and the second time around was not as kind to the Thunder. After a scoreless first period, Merrill exploded for seven goals in the second. Merrill added two more in the third period, and the Thunder avoided a shutout with a late goal from Denny that brought the final score to 9-1. King, who was under constant attack, made 40 saves in the loss.

Although the winning streak came to an end, the PeeWees have won 13 of their last 15 and stand at 22-13 on the season. They will return to play on Sunday when they travel to Oshkosh for a doubleheader.

The 12U Girls played a pair of games at Washington County on Saturday. WC took game one 4-1, and the Thunder earned a 1-1 tie in game-two.
