Thunder PeeWees take 4th, High School 6th at State

MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder High School and PeeWee hockey teams closed out their seasons at the WAHA State Tournament over the weekend. The PeeWee’s took an opening round win and placed fourth while the High School team finished sixth.

 

HIGH SCHOOL

The Thunder High School team was in Ozaukee this weekend for the WAHA State Tournament. The Thunder notched a win over Southwest on their way to a sixth-place finish.

The Thunder opened the tournament against Hudson and suffered a narrow 5-4 loss.

In the consolation bracket, the Thunder topped Southwest 8-5 and then took on Kenosha Minor in the consolation bracket finial, falling by a score of 8-2.

PEEWEE

The Thunder PeeWees traveled to Park Falls for the WAHA 12U 4A State Tournament with high hopes following a tremendous season. The team took an opening round win over Barron/Chetek on its way to a fourth-place finish.

The action started on Friday with Barron Chetek, and hat-tricks from Collin Campbell and Wyatt Denny paced the Thunder to a 9-4 win.

First-period goals from Collin Campbell and Wyatt Denny staked the Thunder to a 2-0 lead.

The Grizzlies put three on the board in the third period, but the Thunder managed to extend the lead with four of their own. Courtney Campbell assisted her brother, Collin, and then scored off an assist from Chuckie Bird. Collin Campbell assisted a Logan Sakovitz goal, and Michael O’Connor closed out the period with a goal to bring the score to 6-3.

In the third period, Denny ripped off two in a row to complete his hat-trick and Campbell capped the scoring with his third of the day. All four Barron/Chetek goals were scored by Brody Hammann.

Barron/Chetek outshot the Thunder 47-28, but Ethan King manned the goal for the Thunder and notched 43 saves.

On Saturday, the Thunder faced off with a vaunted Tomahawk team and fell by a score of 13-3. All three Thunder goals were scored by Denny, while a constantly pressured King made 27 saves. Tomahawk went on to defeat Altoona 8-2 in the State Championship game.

The Thunder then took on Ashland in a battle for third place. After an early Ashland goal, Denny tied the game, and then Sakovitz gave the Thunder a first-period lead with assists from Denny and Campbell.

Ashland scored three unanswered goals in the second period and then tacked two more on in the third to seal a 6-2 win.

King was again between the pipes and came up with 28 saves, giving him 98 saves in three tournament games.

The team, led by coaches Eric Campbell, Jason Sakovitz and Tyler Cahill, finished the season at 25-16 overall. They notched an 11-game winning streak and had a record of 16-5 in the second half of the season.
