Hockey season gets underway with 12U girls and squirt games

MARINETTE – The Marinette & Menominee Area Youth Hockey Association kicked off its season this weekend at the Community REC Center.

 

MARINETTE – The Marinette & Menominee Area Youth Hockey Association kicked off its season this weekend at the Community REC Center. The Thunder 12U Girls and Squirt teams were in action, going a combined 2-2-1 in five games. The High School team is set to begin its season on Friday, November 19 when they host Marquette at the REC.

12U GIRLS

The 12U Girls hosted Central Wisconsin on Friday. The Storm took game one 5-0 before the Thunder responded with a 4-1 win in game two.

In game two, Kendal Truckey scored the season’s first goal. After CW’s Elisabeth Meyer tied the game, Arianna Johnson scored to give the Thunder a 2-1 lead at the first intermission. Truckey turned a good day into a great day with goals in the second and third periods to complete a hat-trick and secure a 4-1 win.

Owen Shaffer tended the net for the Thunder with a combined 39 saves including 22 in the game two victory.

The Thunder girls will host Green Bay at the REC Center in a doubleheader on Saturday. Game one is scheduled for an 11:15 a.m. start.

SQUIRT B

The Thunder Squirts hosted Shawano on Saturday, with the B team delivering a 3-3 tie as well as a 5-3 win.

In the first game, Parker Perket got the scoring started with an assist from Chet Lacy. Brayden Forgette then scored unassisted, and the Thunder led 2-1 at the end of the first period.

Perket gave the Thunder a 3-2 lead in the third period, with an assist from Shaffer, but Shawano’s Teddy Hrabik scored his third goal of the day to knot the game at 3-3.

Landon Dura made 13 saves for the Thunder to preserve the tie.

In game two, Shawano scored first but Lacy and Calvin Schroeder (assisted by Perket) scored to push the score to 2-1 at the end of the first period.

In the second period, Jaxen Teteak scored with an assist from Lacy, and Forgette scored to give the Thunder a 4-3 lead heading into the final period.

Another goal from Forgette, his second of the game and third of the day, gave the Thunder some breathing room at 5-3.

Hrabik netted a pair of goals for Shawano, giving him five of the Lightning’s six goals on the day.

Shaffer made 11 saves to pick up the win.

The Squirt B team returns to action when they host Manitowoc in a doubleheader on Saturday. The puck drops for game one at 9:30 a.m.

SQUIRT C

The Squirt C team also took on Shawano on Saturday, falling by a final score of 12-6.

The Thunder got goals from Cael Schmidt and Sullivan Reek in the first period and trailed by just one at 3-2 heading into the second period.

Shawano put the game out of reach with six goals in the second period.

The Thunder’s Madison Salewski recorded her first goal in the second period as did Holden Ruiz at the start of the third. Reek then scored back-to-back goals to give him the season’s first hat-trick.

The Thunder C team will host Manitowoc in a doubleheader beginning at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday.
