PeeWee and Bantam open seasons while Squirts battle Ozaukee

MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder Hockey weekend slate featured Squirt B & C games at the Community REC Center on Saturday as well as Bantam and PeeWee games on Sunday. The Thunder High School team is set to open its season when it hosts Marquette this Friday and Saturday.

BANTAM

The Bantam team opened its season by splitting a pair of games with Oshkosh at the REC Center on Sunday. The Thunder responded to a 5-3 game-one loss with a 6-3 victory in game-two.

Early goals from Blue Haley and Damien Winterbottom gave the Thunder a 2-0 lead in game-one, but the Ice Dogs scored three unanswered goals. Haley tied the game at 3-3 midway through the second, but Oshkosh tacked on two more goals before the end of the period.

Ethan King made 18 saves in game-one.

In game-two. Haley staked the Thunder to another 2-0 lead in the first period, and this time the Thunder never gave up the lead.

Brayden Rounds added a goal in the second period, and the Thunder salted the game away with three more in the third period.

Logan Sakovitz scored with an assist from Chase Linsmeier before Rounds completed an opening-day hat-trick with a pair of unassisted scores.

Katie Olson made 19 saves in her Bantam debut at goalie, while King made a pair of stops as well.

The Bantams will host Fox Valley at the REC Center on Saturday.

PEEWEE

The Thunder PeeWees opened their season with a sweep of Oshkosh on Sunday. The Thunder romped to a 14-2 win in game-one and took a 5-3 win in game-two.

In game one, The Thunder put four goals in the board in the first period and seven more in the second to run away with the contest.

Collin Campbell opened his season red-hot, scoring five goals and recording an assist. He had four goals in the second period alone.

Eight different players scored in the game. Jesse McClarren and Michael O’Connor each had a pair of goals, while Connor Eastman, Bryce Vincent, Dixon Polzin, Chuckie Bird, and Whitney Haile also scored.

Eastman and Connor Radtke each had a pair of assists, while Bird, Haile, Owen Haley and Noah Gilbert also had helpers.

In game two, goals from Jack Aftanas and Bird in the second period gave the Thunder a 2-1 advantage. Bird started the third period with two more goals to complete a hat-trick, and McClarren capped the scoring with an empty-netter in the final seconds of the game.

Grace Loomis tended the net in both games and recorded 30 saves on the day.

The PeeWees will host Shawano in a doubleheader on Saturday.

SQUIRT B

The Squirt B team dropped a pair of games against Manitowoc on Saturday. The Breakers scored in the final seconds to take a 5-4 win in game-one and then prevailed 6-2 in game-two.

In game-one, Calvin Schroeder got the Thunder on the board first before Manitowoc’s Brielle Schaefer tied the game at 1-1. The Breakers outscored the Thunder 3-2 in the second period with the home team getting scores from Schroeder and Parker Perket.

Jaxen Teteak tied the game at 4-4 when he scored with an assist from Perket with 3:27 to play, but Manitowoc’s Braden Dickrell netted the game winner in the final minute of the contest.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the second period, the Breakers put game-two away with a four-goal second period. Perket found the net twice, but that was all the offense the Thunder would get in a 6-2 loss.

The Squirt B team now holds a record of 1-2-1 overall. They will travel to Green Bay for a pair of games on Saturday, November 27.

SQUIRT C

The Squirt C team also played Manitowoc on Saturday, earning a 4-4 tie in game one before being defeated 5-2 in game-two.

Sam McKenney recorded his first hat-trick in game-one, while Sullivan Reek added a goal and an assist to the effort.

McKenney’s two goals in the second period gave the Thunder a 4-2 lead, but Manitowoc found the net twice in the third period to knot the score at 4-4.

In game-two Robby Chaltry scored unassisted and Kelvin Winterbottom scored with an assist from McKenney to account for the Thunder offense.

Carter Erdman made 28 saves in the two games including 13 in the game-one draw.

The Squirt C Team will host Green Bay in a doubleheader on Saturday, November 27.
