MARINETTE – This weekend saw the M&M Thunder Bantam team reach the final of the Battle at the REC where they were defeated in an overtime thriller. Meanwhile the High School team got in the win column at Verona, and the Squirt B team won the consolation bracket in Eagle River.

HIGH SCHOOL

The Thunder High School team (1-2) earned its first victory of the season, 7-3 at Verona on Saturday.

Adam Lemery paced the offense with five goals on the night.

Lemery wasted no time making his presence felt with a goal just 43 seconds into the contest.

Verona tied the game in the opening minute of the second period, but Lemery was good for two more goals while Grant Burg added another to put the Thunder up 4-2 heading into the third.

In the final period, Lemery netted goals number four and five on the night, and Corbin Spencer capped the scoring at 7-3.

Kennison Boivin had a pair of assists in the game while Simon Bowers, Burg, and Ashlynn Haley had helpers as well.

On Sunday, the Thunder took on the Beloit Raptors and fell by a final score of 7-2. Lemery added another goal to his weekend, while Joey Danielak also found the net and Simon Bowers had two assists.

The high school team will now prepare to host their home tournament at the Community REC Center December 17-19.

BANTAM

The Thunder Bantams hosted the Battle at the REC this weekend and advanced to the tournament championship game where they played Copper Country to overtime before settling for second place in a 3-2 heartbreaker.

In Sunday’s title game, Copper Country scored first. Damien Winterbottom leveled the game midway through the first period, but Max Aldrich made it a 2-1 game when he scored on a power-play just three seconds before a Thunder penalty expired.

In the second period, Chase Linsmeier tied the game off a beautiful back-post pass from Blue Haley.

Both teams had their chances, but the Thunder’s Ethan King and Copper Country’s Jacob Tormala came up with 20 and 24 saves respectively to hold the score at 2-2 through regulation.

King came up with three more saves in overtime, but 2:36 into the extra frame a shot from Ian Hembroff deflected off of multiple defenders and trickled into the net for the game-winner.

The Thunder run started Friday evening when they opened the tournament with a 5-0 win over Sheboygan.

Haley threw in a hat-trick in the first period to stake King to a commanding early lead.

King came up with 15 saves to stymie the Lakers and earn the shutout while Logan Sakovitz and Brayden Rounds added third-period goals.

That set up a seminal matchup with Iron Mountain on Saturday. The game was marred by a whopping 22 penalties including 17 in the first period. Although neither team spent much time at full strength, the infractions couldn’t prevent a dramatic finish in an evenly played contest.

A flurry of three goals, including one from Haley, in a two-minute span early in the first left the Thunder down 2-1.

Caiden Radtke tied the game in the second with an assist from Courtney Campbell.

The Iron Kings pushed ahead 3-2 in the third, but Chase Linsmeier scored on a power play to tie the game with just over eight minutes to play.

With 3:55 to play, the 22nd penalty of the game was called against Iron Mountain, and just as that 1:30 penalty expired, Sakovitz took a pass from Campbell and netted the game-winner.

The Bantams now hold a record of 4-4-1 on the season. They will return to action on Saturday when they host Green Bay.

PEEWEE

The Thunder PeeWee’s traveled to Marquette on Saturday, dropping a pair of games with scores of 9-5 and 5-4.

Collin Campbell poured in four goals in game-one, and Dixon Polzin found the net as well, but the Thunder could not overcome a 5-goal second period from Marquette.

In game-two Campbell accounted or all four Thunder goals including three in the second period. His final goal, with 3:53 to play in the second, tied the game at 4-4, but Marquette’s Landen Reamer scored the game-winner midway through the third period.

The PeeWee’s will travel to Green Bay for a doubleheader on Saturday.

SQUIRT B

The Thunder Squirt B team took part in the Eagle River Invitational this weekend and finished as the consolation bracket champion.

The Thunder’s first game may have been the game of the tournament as Elmbrook went on to win the championship after sinking the Thunder 3-2 with a last-minute goal.

After the Eagles broke a scoreless tie early in the second period, Parker Perket tied the game two minutes later.

Three minutes into the third period Jaxson Teteak gave the Thunder a 2-1 lead with an assist from Owen Shaffer.

The Eagles tied the game three minutes later and the contest seemed destined for overtime, but Elmbrook’s Chase Cusatis scored with 49 ticks left on the clock to send the Eagles to the tournament semifinals.

The Thunder responded to the loss with an emphatic 4-0 win against Washington County Saturday afternoon.

Chet Lacy started the scoring with an assist from Calvin Schroeder, and Landon Dura made it 2-0 in the first with an assist from Teteak.

Schroeder found the net in the second period, and Perket put the game well out of reach with a goal in the third.

The Thunder outshot the Ice 18-10, while Shaffer came up with 10 saves to earn the shutout.

Shaffer stayed hot between the pipes in the consolation bracket championship against Waukesha, coming up with 14 saves to post back-to-back shutouts.

Meanwhile the Thunder did all their offensive damage in the first period with a pair of goals from Teteak and a third from Schroeder. Brayden Forgette and Perket added assists to the effort.

The Squirt B’s are now 7-3-1 on the season. They will travel to Shawano on Saturday.
