Thunder splits pair at Dodgeville

MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder high school hockey team split a pair of games at Dodgeville over the weekend. The Thunder won game one 4-2 before the Ice Wolves took game two 5-1.

 

MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder high school hockey team split a pair of games at Dodgeville over the weekend. The Thunder won game one 4-2 before the Ice Wolves took game two 5-1.

HIGH SCHOOL

The Thunder were looking to avenge a sweep at the hands of the Ice Wolves at the Community REC Center in mid-January and were on their way to doing so in game one.

After the Ice Wolves scored the only goal of the first period, Adam Lemery tied the game midway through the second period with an assist from Mason Denny.

Dodgeville answered just over a minute later, but Glenn Woodworth sent the game to the third period in a 2-2 tie when he scored off an assist from Lemery.

In the third period, the Thunder outshot the Ice Wolves 13-9 and got goals from Mason Boivin and Theron Thayer while Simon Bowers and Joey Danielak added assists.

Roman Steffeck manned the cage, stopping all nine Dodgeville shots in the third period and racking up 28 saves in the game.

After a clean first game in which the two teams combined for just four penalties, game two featured 13 infractions including seven calls against the Thunder and six against Dodgeville.

The Ice Wolves again put up the lone goal of the first period. Things got away from the Thunder in the second period when they were outscored 3-1, managing an unassisted strike from Mason Boivin. Dodgeville tacked on an insurance goal in the third period to account for the 5-1 final score.

The Thunder will welcome two Marquette teams to the Community REC Center this weekend as they prepare to host the WAHA 18U State Tournament next weekend. They will take on Marquette BB in a pair of games on Saturday and then play Marquette Togo’s JV twice on Sunday.

BANTAM

The Thunder Bantam team closed out its regular season slate by going 3-0-1 in games against Shawano and Rhinelander over the weekend.

The team has gone 8-2-2 in their last 12 games heading into this weekend’s WAHA 14U 4A State Tournament and now holds an overall record of 18-14-2.

On Saturday, they traveled to Shawano and came away with a 3-3 tie and a 4-3 victory.

In game one, the Lightning put two unanswered goals on the board in the first period.

Damien Winterbottom got the Thunder started with a goal in the second period, and Blue Haley tied things up with just under five minutes to play.

In the third period, Shawano surged ahead with a goal with two minutes to play, but Haley evened things back up 33 seconds later.

Ethan King stopped 28 of the 31 shots he faced.

King turned a good day into a great day with 23 saves, including several of the spectacular variety in game two.

The Thunder got goals from Avery Waloway and Haley in the first period to keep the game even at 2-2 before Brayden Rounds gave the team the lead in the second period.

With three minutes to play, Chase Nerat gave the Thunder some breathing room when he picked the pocket of a Shawano defender and scored to make it 4-2.

The Lightning pulled their goalie in the closing minutes and managed to put one in the net with just over a minute to play, but King was able to preserve the win.

On Sunday, the Bantams hosted Rhinelander at the REC Center and delivered convincing wins with scores of 7-1 and 9-2.

In game one, Haley netted a hat-trick, Nerat scored twice, and Winterbottom and Rounds scored as well. Rounds, Nerat, Haley and Logan Sakovitz all had assists.

In game two, Rounds had a hat trick, while Winterbottom finished with two goals and two assists. Haley, Waloway, Sakovitz and Nerat scored as well.

Haley and Caiden Radtke added a pair of helpers, while Sakovitz, Courtney Campbell, Addison Lacy and Abby Aftanas had assists.

The Thunder will travel to Manitowoc this weekend for the WAHA 14U 4A State Tournament. They will open with a game against Price Ice at 8 a.m. on Saturday.

PEEWEE

The Thunder Peewee team dropped a pair of games in Merrill on Sunday with scores of 11-0 and 9-6.

After playing shorthanded in game one, the Thunder managed some offense in game two, but Merrill put five goals on the board in the first period and outshot the Thunder 38-20.

Collin Campbell scored four goals. Conner Eastman and Owen Haley also found the net, while Simon King had an assist.

The Peewee team will close out the season this weekend when they host Appleton on Sunday. Game one is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start with the puck dropping in game two at 12:30 p.m.

12U Girls

The Thunder 12U Girls suffered a pair of shutout losses at Mosinee on Saturday, falling with scores of 6-0 and 3-0.

Gracelyn Loomis tallied 62 saves, 33 in game one and 29 in game two.

The 12U Girls will host Elmbrook at the REC Center on Saturday in their final preparation for the WAHA State Tournament next weekend.

SQUIRT B

The Thunder Squirt B team dropped four games this weekend against DePere A and Fox Valley.

After being shutout in game one at DePere, the Thunder got goals from Wyatt Kneath, Jaxen Teteak and Calvin Schroeder.

Landon Dura and Parker Perket found the net against Fox Valley, while Alex Bird made 14 saves in his second appearance in goal.

Despite those losses, the team closed out its season with an overall record of 17-13-3. After being outscored 40-5 this weekend, they still outscored their opponents 146-123 on the season while pitching nine shutouts and being shutout only five times.

MITES

Saturday’s action at the Community REC Center was all about the little ones as the Thunder Mites White and Blue teams hosted a jamboree.

The round robin tournament was won by Shawano with Manitowoc finishing as the runner-up. The Thunder’s Owen Campbell took first place in the 6U fastest skater competition.

Meanwhile the Thunder Red team won the Monsters on Ice Jamboree in Appleton. The Thunder defeated Waupaca 10-9, SHAW 23-3 and Green Bay 8-4.
