BANTAM
The Thunder Bantam team hosted the Battle at the REC tournament this weekend and placed fourth among eight teams.
In their opening-round game on Friday, the Thunder squared off with McFarland and scored a 4-2 win behind a hattrick from Logan Sakovitz.
Chase Nerat got the scoring started in the first period with an assist from Wes Baty. Sakovitz made it 2-0 with an assist from Bryce Vincent.
McFarland tied the game early in the third period, but Sakovitz answered off an assist from Noah Gilbert with 3:35 to play, and later added an empty-netter to push the score to 4-2.
McFarland outshot the Thunder 42-14, but Alex King made 40 saves to seal the win.
In the semifinal round and third-place game against SHAW and Fox Valley respectively, the Thunder could not overcome lopsided shot counts. Ethan King made 42 saves against SHAW in a 5-0 loss, and Fox Valley ran away with a double-figure win in the following contest.
Marquette defeated SHAW 9-3 to take the tournament championship.
HIGH SCHOOL
The Thunder High School team will take another crack at opening its season on Sunday when the team hosts a doubleheader with Ontonagon, Mich. Game one is scheduled for a 10:45 a.m. start with game two to be played at 1:45 p.m..
The team was originally scheduled to open the season two weeks ago, but a state-wide referee shortage left the Thunder without officials. However, this weekend the games are on, and the Thunder will finally hit the ice.
The Thunder are coming off a 13-15-1 season, but a late surge in which the team went 7-3-1 over their final 11 games lifted them to the WAHA State semfinals.
