MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder high school hockey team moved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-4 win over Manitowoc United at the Community REC Center on Friday. Saturday and Sunday, Mite Madness descended up on the REC Center as the Thunder 8U’s hosted their annual holiday tournament.

HIGH SCHOOL

The Thunder offense continued to roll, showing off its speed and agility while piling up 71 shots against Manitowoc.

The game started with fireworks as Blue Haley and Damien Winterbottom both found the net in the first minute of play to stake the Thunder to a 2-0 lead.

“That set the tone,” coach Alex McDonald said of the early strike. “We were able to teach a lot of ice-time lessons from there.”

From that point, Manitowoc goalie Daniel Karlin turned in a masterful performance against heavy pressure from the home team.

Karlin saved the next 24 shots in the first period while a goal from Benson Dickrell cut the margin in half and another from Myles Dekok tied the game with 17 seconds to play in the frame.

“We did a lot of things well, but (Karlin) was absolutely amazing and he got hot as the game went on,” McDonald said, “but our message was to just get the puck deep and get to the locker room.”

The Thunder continued to fire away, but for the remainder of the game Karlin only cracked in power play situations on his way to an impressive 65 saves.

In the second period, Manitowoc committed four penalties, and the Thunder converted all four into goals.

Avery Waloway put the Thunder back on top, and Joey Danielak, Caiden Radtke, and Broden Krouse all scored in the last five minutes of the period to stretch the margin to 6-2.

With a four-goal cushion the Thunder could cruise to the win although Manitowoc applied some pressure in the third period with power-play goals from Dekok and Sam Hinz, the later coming with only 3:36 to play.

Even with the lead cut in half, McDonald wasn’t concerned because of the way his team was able to possess the puck.

“There was no reason they should score two more goals on us if we just did our thing and try to get the puck deep,” he said. “Their goalie was too hot to take chances, but we had time on our side.”

Manitowoc sent six players to the penalty box with the Thunder capitalizing on four of their six power-play opportunities. Meanwhile, the Thunder were whistled only twice, and Manitowoc converted both of those third-period penalties into goals.

Glenn Woodworth saved 13 of the 17 shots he faced.

The Thunder were credited with 10 assists on their six goals all from different players. Radtke, Krause, Haley, Winterbottom and Waloway all had helpers while Simon Bowers, Theron Thayer, Brayden Rounds, Corbin Spencer and Mason Denny made their mark on the scoresheet as well.

This was the first of four meetings between the two teams. They will meet in Manitowoc February 10th and 11th, and again at the REC Center on February 26.

The Thunder are back in action with a pair of games in Madison on January 30th and 31st.
