MANITOWOC, Wis. – The M&M Thunder high school hockey team notched a 3-1 victory at Manitowoc United on Friday.

“I loved the effort today,” coach Fred Haley said after the game. “There were a lot of blind passes I didn’t like, and it was a little sloppy at times, but on the whole I loved the way they played today and I’m happy with the result.”

After committing 17 penalties in their opening weekend in Saul Ste. Marie last week, the Thunder committed just one infraction on Friday.

“They definitely worked a lot better than they did last weekend,” Haley said. “With only one penalty compared to all the penalties we had last weekend, it makes it a little easier. Even the one penalty wasn’t a bad penalty. They just got tied up and that happens.”

Caiden Radtke got the Thunder on the board first with a breakaway goal six minutes into the contest.

Theron Thayer made it 2-0 off a pass from Blue Haley six minutes later, and Glenn Woodworth stopped all nine shots he faced to give the Thunder a 2-0 cushion at the first intermission.

United picked up the offensive intensity in the second period, pouring in 15 shots in the frame. With 7:24 on the clock, Benson Dickrell finally snuck one past Woodworth to cut the margin to 2-1.

The score remained 2-1 when the Thunder were called for their first penalty. A tripping infraction with three minutes to play gave United a two-minute power play. However, just 22 seconds later, Manitowoc’s Peter Cigler was called for interference in retaliation to an open-ice hit from Damien Winterbottom negating United’s man advantage.

In the final minute of the game, Haley picked the pocket of a United defenseman and scored a power-play goal to seal the 3-1 Thunder win.

For the game, Manitowoc outshot the Thunder 29-23, but Woodworth stopped 28 of the shots he faced while his counterpart, Daniel Karlin, was 20-of-23.

The Thunder improved to 1-2 with the win while Manitowoc fell to 0-2 on the young season.

The Thunder are back in action this weekend when they travel to Beloit, Wis. to take part in Beloit Youth Hockey Association’s Rumble on the Rock Tournament.
