Mite Madness hits the REC Center

MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder Hockey weekend featured holiday spirited cross ice action at the Marinette Community REC Center and a rematch of a State Championship Game from a year ago as seven association teams were in action.

 

Mite Madness

The REC Center played host to the fourth annual Mite Madness Holiday Tournament Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The tournament featured 22 teams from seven associations in Wisconsin and Michigan as well as a visit from Santa Clause, a caroling choir, a bake sale, cotton candy, hot chocolate, and many other goodies.

Players ages 4-8 competed at three levels including Red and White tournaments and a Blue jamboree.

In the Red tournament, Appleton defeated Fon du Lac 7-5 in the championship game while Marquette topped Sheboygan 8-4 in the White championship game.

The tournament also featured a Fastest Skater competition. Appleton’s Hayden Gurga took the title at the Red level while De Pere’s Gavin Gerhard and Green Bay’s George Ariens earned the speed titles for White and Blue.

Squirt A

The Thunder Squirt A team traveled to Rhinelander, Wis. for the Hodag Invitational.

The Thunder knocked off the hosting Hodags 7-0 in their opening game and then defeated Middleton 4-3 in overtime to advance to the championship game.

The title bout pitted the Thunder against Somerset in a rematch of last year’s WAHA Squirt 4B Championship game which the Thunder won 4-3 in an overtime thriller.

Somerset led 2-0 when Ryan Haile got the Thunder on the board in the third period. However, the Thunder could not come up with an equalizer, and Somerset added a power play goal in the closing minute to take the title by a score of 3-1.

Carter Campbell collected seven goals in the tournament including four against Rhinelander. Haile notched a pair of goals including the overtime game-winner against Middleton. Ashton Behrens, Owen Campbell, Liam Hofer, and Henry Schutt also scored goals for the Thunder, while Campbell, Henry Karkkainen, Braylen Puser, Finn Eastman and Haile provided assists.

Liam Kegley manned the pipes in all three games, racking up 36 saves against 43 shots (.837) including seven saves in the shutout against Rhinelander.

The Thunder Squirt A team will return to action on Saturday, December 30, when they host Fox Valley.

Peewee A

The Thunder Peewee A team dropped a pair of games at Iron Mountain on Saturday with scores of 7-2 and 10-3.

Parker Perket netted four of the Thunder’s five goals including a hattrick in game two. Wyatt Kneath also scored, and Alex Bird had an assist.

The Thunder return to the ice on Saturday when they host Iron Mountain at the REC Center. Game times are scheduled for 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Peewee B

The Thunder Peewee B team fell with scores of 8-3 and 12-3 at Green Bay on Saturday.

Calvin Schroeder posted four goals and two assists in the two games. Cael Schmidt scored twice, and Preston Nelson and Maggy Resch each had an assist.

The Peewee B Team will return to action on Saturday, when it hosts Waupaca at the REC Center. Game times are set for 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Bantam

The Thunder Bantam team played a doubleheader at Marquette, Mich. on Saturday and came away with a split with a 4-2 win in game two after dropping game one 3-2.

Wes Baty scored both Thunder goals in game one. Baty found the net again in game two along with Lucien Thayer, Bryce Vincent and Jesse McClarren.

Jack Aftanas worked both games in goal, tallying 62 saves on the day including 32 in the game-two victory.

The Thunder Bantams are off until January 13, when they host Marquette at the REC Center.
