MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder high school hockey team returned to the ice with three games over the weekend. The team is now prepping to host its Battle at the REC Tournament this weekend.

The Thunder returned from a three-week layoff on Friday and earned a 4-4 draw at Green Bay United. The team then hosted a strong Marquette team on Saturday and dropped both ends of a doubleheader with scores of 10-2 and 7-0.

Offense prevailed immediately after the long layoff as six of the game’s eight goals were scored in the first period.

After GBU scored the game’s first two goals, Brayden Rounds netted the first of a trio of first-period goals for the Thunder off an assist from Simon Bowers.

United pushed ahead 3-1 with a pair of goals including one from former Thunder forward Broden Krause, but goals from Blue Haley (assisted by Chase Nerat) and Theron Thayer (assisted by Damien Winterbottom and Willow Burke) tied the game 3-3 through one period of play.

Both defenses settled in for the remainder of the game. The two teams battle through a scoreless second period before United’s Landon Thompson ended the drought midway through the third period. Rounds came up with an equalizer two minutes later, and the game ended in a 4-4 tie.

Glenn Woodworth made 39 saves for the Thunder while Brady Boldt made 28 stops for United.

The Thunder faced a very quick turnaround with the puck dropping for game one of a doubleheader with Marquette less than 11 hours after the end of the Green Bay game.

Marquette made quick work of the home team. The Thunder’s only goals came in game one when Haley and Rounds found the net while Nerat added an assist to his weekend.

The Thunder stand at 5-6-2 on the season.

The Battle at the REC Tournament will feature six teams including the Thunder, Iron River (Mich.), Madison, Dodgeville, Ontonagon (Mich.), and Iowa City. The action begins at 6 p.m. on Friday at the Community REC Center when the Thunder take on the Iron River Ice Hawks.
