MARINETTE – The M&M Thunder high school hockey team took a shortened roster to Dodgeville and Madison for three WAHA games over the weekend. Meanwhile the Thunder Squirts hosted the Battle at the REC Tournament.

HIGH SCHOOL

The Thunder continued to cobble together a shortened lineup as the team weathers injuries.

Just a week after ripping 42 shots and collecting six goals against Manitowoc, the Thunder could not muster a similar offensive effort against Dodgeville. The Ice Wolves swept a pair of contests with scores of 9-0 and 8-0.

Ethan King was under duress throughout both contests, totaling 92 saves including a whopping 56 in game-two.

The Thunder closed the weekend with a 4-2 loss at Madison.

Nico Fox worked the net against the Cardinals. Damien Winterbottom got the Thunder on the board first, and Fox made that goal stand for a 1-0 lead through one period of play.

Madison came up with four second-period goals including one just before the horn to take control of the contest at 4-1.

Brayden Rounds hit paydirt with 9:51 remaining in the game. Two minutes later, as the Thunder were mounting a comeback, the officiating crew instructed the clock operator to shorten the game by five minutes with no explanation offered to the Thunder coaching staff, and the game quickly ended in a 4-2 score.

The Thunder have a week off to get back to full strength. They will return to the ice when they host Dodgeville Friday, February 23.

PEEWEE A

The Thunder Peewee A team played De Pere to a 3-3 draw before dropping game two 5-3.

The Thunder got goals from Sullivan Reek, Landon Dura and Parker Perket as well as assists from Perket, Reek and Chet Lacy in game one. In game two, Perket hit the net twice while Dura scored again. Dura and Carter Erdman tallied assists in the loss.

Sam McKenney manned the net in both games and posted 37 saves on the day.

The Thunder will take part in the Badger State Games in Wausau on Saturday and Sunday.

PEEWEE B

The Thunder Peewee B team suffered a pair of losses, 6-1 and 7-3, at De Pere on Saturday.

Jaxon Teteak (2), Calvin Schroeder, and Cael Schmidt scored the Thunder’s goals, while Teteak and Vincent Schmitz tallied assists.

Madisen Salewsky recorded an .824 save percentage on the day, stopping 61 of the 74 shots she faced.

The Peewee B team will host Wausau in a pair of games on Sunday.

SQUIRT A

The Thunder Squirt A team placed fourth in the Battle at the REC Tournament. After dropping their opening game 7-3 against Green Bay, the Thunder defeated Iron Mountain 10-2 in pool play. In Sunday’s third-place game, the Thunder were defeated 4-1 by De Pere.

The Thunder jumped ahead of Green Bay 3-0 with goals from Henry Karkkainen, Liam Hofer and Carter Campbell, but the Bobcats stormed back with three in the second period and four more in the third.

A seven-goal second period against Iron Mountain paced the Thunder to an easy win. Carter Campbell (4), Ashton Behrens (2), Braylen Puser (2) and Owen Campbell (2) handled the scoring effort.

Carter Campbell netted the lone Thunder goal against De Pere, giving him six goals for the tournament.

Liam Kegley made 35 saves in the three games including 19 against De Pere.

The Squirt A team will travel to Schofield, Wis. to take on DC Everest in a pair of games on Saturday.

SQUIRT B

The Thunder Squirt B team used a pair of pool play wins over Manitowoc and Sheboygan to reach the Championship Game of the Battle at the REC Tournament where they were defeated 9-3 by Copper Country.

The Thunder opened the tournament with an 8-6 win over Manitowoc in a rematch of their WAHA Playdown game one week earlier.

Six different Thunder players found the net against Manitowoc with Ryder Erickson and Everett Skowlund scoring two each and Hannah Frederiksen, Ty Olson, Maverick Tardiff and Dean Gerondale scoring as well.

Against Sheboygan Gerondale exploded for six goals while Skowlund and Nova Zeske each scored twice and Tardiff scored once.

In Sunday’s championship game, the Thunder could not overcome a three-goal first period from Copper Country.

Two goals from Gerondale and another from Skowlund were not enough to keep pace in a 9-3 loss.

Benton Behrens made 27 saves in the three tournament games.

Gerondale was the leading scorer in the tournament’s C-Bracket with nine goals in three games.

The Squirt B team will travel to Shawano for a doubleheader on Saturday.
